Centrifuging is one of the more important activities in a lab. Separating solutions and precipitates is critical for many functions in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biology. But most centrifuges are designed to hold specially made centrifuge tubes or glass flasks & test tubes. But sometimes a small laboratory needs to centrifuge a microplate (a plate with multiple wells in a rectangular matrix) rather than in individual tubes. The question is how to centrifuge such plates? Some centrifuges have adapters for microplates but these are a bit clunky and awkward.
Benchmark now introduces the Platefuge, the first microcentrifuge with a swing-out rotor for handling microplates.
Vortex mixers are an important part of any lab that needs to mix or stir liquids thoroughly. The vortexing action (video link) assures an even blending and since you just push the tube or beaker against the Vortexer you don’t need to waste any time loading a shaker.

The Vornado measures less than 4″ wide and mixes with a fixed speed of 2800 rpm on a 4mm orbit. It can handle tubes up to 50ml in capacity. The overall size is under 4″ x 4″ making it perfect for crowded labs. And yes, that does mean it can literally fit in the palm of some people’s hands.
We have Water Baths, and we have Laboratory Shakers but there are actually many times in Chemistry and BioChemistry where you actually need to have both: The temperature control heating of a water bath combined with the shaking of a Lab Shake. Since it is considered a bad idea to put electrical equipment into water a solution is needed. Hence why BenchMark has developed the SB-12L Shaking Water Bath
The SB-12L does double duty as a water bath as well as a laboratory shaker. It can operate at temperatures from Ambient+5°C up to 80°C. The accuracy is +/- 0.3°C and is set in 0.1°C increments. The shaker portion has an orbit of 25mm and speed range of 30-200 rpm in single increments. The unit is compact, with just 12″ x 13.5″ x 12″. The interior chamber is stainless steel and measures 5.3 x 9.4 x 5.5 in. The timer can have the Shaking Water Bath run from 1 minute up to 48 hours, or operate on a continuous operation. Like all electrical BenchMark lab equipment, the device can run on 115V or 230V, be sure to request the proper plug for your country if ordering for out of the USA.
Bottles, tubes and flasks can be inserted individually and the SB12L holds 12 50ml flasks, 8x125ml flasks, 3x250ml flasks, or 2x500ml flasks or 1 1000ml flask. Some larger flasks may not fit in the water bath. The SB-12L holds an equal or greater number of bottles or tubes. A Universal spring platform is included for holding 15ml and 50ml tubes which the SB-12L can hold 63 or 15/30 respectively.
The SB-12L has a hinged, removable lid to reduce splashing, save energy and divert condensation. When removed the SB-12L can handle taller flasks and bottles.

Continuing with their fine tradition of producing high quality laboratory instruments Benchmark Scientific has introduced the Incu-Mixer microplate heater and shaker , available in two sizes: 2 microplates or 4 microplates.
Equipment to shake and heat at the same time is hardly a new thing to Benchmark, but previously such equipment was on the larger size and designed for either microtubes or flasks. The Incu-Mixer is designed to mix and heat Microplates:
So. homogenizers. Quite possibly the most violent of devices used in a laboratory. When you consider that the term ‘homogenize’ is a more scientific term for ‘beaten to a (literal) pulp’. This process is used for turning organic material (such as bone, wood, plants) in to a material that can be better examined.
While we joke about homogenizers beating organic materials to a pulp, keep in mind that what a homogenizer does is actually destroy the cell walls of a material. This process is called lysis. It has many uses, far too many to go into here.
Spectrum has already carried the excellent Benchmark Scientific Homogenizers the BeadBug and the BeadBlaster. These are fine devices but they have two disadvantages: one is their lack of portability, and two is that the material needs to be inserted in microtubes prefilled with mashing material (beads). Well, Benchmark has now added a new homogenizer to their product line, it is the D1000 Handheld Homongenizer:
Dry Baths are a staple of labwork, and we’ve carried a decent variety of them – mostly supplied by BenchMark Scientific. But there have been some minor issues in that you can only do one heating run at a time. Sure, you can get models that hold multiple blocks but you end up with the same problem: the blocks are all being heated to the same program and having the same things done to each block.
Sure you can solve the problem by purchasing multiple Dry Baths and have each one run a different program, but in a small lab that means more benchtop real estate taken up, more cables, and more clutter.
BenchMark has decided to relieve the problem by adding a new product to their product line, it is the IsoBlock Digital Dry Bath:
The IsoBlock has two separate heating chambers the are insulated from each other by a blocking wall:
The IsoBlock’s two chambers can each be separately programmed to different heating programs. You effectively get two Digital Dry Baths in one!
The IsoBlock does not come with a block, but is shown with the popular QuickFlip Block that covers a lot of needs. It can hold tubes from 0.5 to 2.0ml, and with a quick flip can handle 0.2 tubes or PCR strips. The IsoBlock can hold two different blocks and different machined blocks are available for everything up to 50ml tubes (note: lid might not close with larger blocks).

BenchMark Scientifics products continue to get better and better. When they started they made a lot of simple, but high-quality and low-priced laboratory equipment. Thermal Cyclers use heat in various ways to amplify DNA by raising and lowering the temperature inside the Cycler. We’ve carried the BenchMark Incu-Shaker 10L since it was introduced. It has been a powerful combination of a laboratory shaker combined with an incubator. It shakes flasks 30 to 300 rpm with a 19mm orbit. Flasks can be held by using a devoted flask system or with the magnetic MAGic Clamp system that uses individual flask holders with magnetic bases to keep them in place during the shaking process. There has been an addition to the family, however, as BenchMark has now introduced the BenchMark Incu-Shaker 10LR, this new system has one new advantage: it not only can heat, but it can cool as well!
Both the 10L and the 10LR can heat up to 60 degrees Celsius, but the 10LR also has a cooling system that allows to to lower temperatures up to 15 degrees below the ambient room temperature. This increases the versatility of the Incu-Shaker with minimal change in the profile. It is one of the most affordable systems on the market!
There is a cost, however, and that is weigh. The Incu-Shaker 10L already weighs in at 120 lbs. and the additional weight of the refrigeration system brings the 10LR up to 170 lbs. We’ve been selling BenchMark’s Agarose LE ever since they announced it. Agarose is a very Multi-Purpose, High purity growth medium used in laboratories for growing bacteria cultures and other special growths.
But now BenchMark Scientific has released 3 new Agaroses as part of their expanding molecular biology line. These have the purity of the Agarose LE, but have other features various laboratories may find useful.
First up is the Agarose LM, or Low-Melt. This is an Agarose designed to remain liquid at just 37 degrees Celsius and gels from 26-30 C. Most other Agaroses need gel at 33 or more degrees C. This allow procedures such as restriction digests and labeling to be carried out in the gel.
The 2nd new Agarose is the Agarose HR, this Agarose is excellent for dealing with very small fragments. Agarose HR is for applications such as analysis of STR’s, AFLP’s, and PCR products where separation of small fragments is required, Benchmark’s Agarose HR is ideal. Clear resolution of 20bp to 800bp fragments can be carried out in this intermediate melting agarose.
Finally, the 3rd new Agarose is the Agarose 3:1, this blended high resolution agarose is designed for separation of fragments less than 1,000bp. Gels made with Agarose 3:1 are suitable for analytical and blotting applications.
