In molecular biology, gel imaging is used to document proteins and nucleic acids suspended in various types of chemical gels. Perhaps the most common version of this you might see outside the lab is when it is used in DNA forensics. Many crime shows often have the forensics people waving what look like an X-Ray of a bunch of dots. But in fact these are images created by using electrophoresis equipment.
A big issue with many systems, however, is that to image these systems you have to use expensive equipment, usually a camera device that underlights the sample in dark chamber. These gel imaging systems can cost thousands of dollars.

The SmartDoc works with almost any Smart Phone as well as iPads and most other Tablets. The system requires only a UV illuminator (or blue light illuminator for certain applications, as well as a filter. Some applications (mostly green dye gels) may require the SmartDoc with Blue Illumination (for top-down illuminating).
The SmartDoc includes features such as a no-slip pad to hold the phone in place, adjustable focus, carrying handles, and rubber trim to prevent stray light from entering the system. You can preview the images on your Smart phone’s screen before taking the image and the images can be analyzed using the free gelanalyzer app.
